Officers of the 5th DLI 1915
At the centre of this group Colonel G O Spence is shown seated in front of the Chaplain, Reverend Birch. Spence lived at Hartburn, Stockton and was a prominent member of local society, his vast collection of arms, armour, archive and objects de vertu form the foundation of the current Museum Collection at Stockton. Spence was very active in the short time after the war and before his death, in efforts to ensure that his fallen comrades were remembered. It is significant that these officers sat for one final photograph together before departing to France. Over one third of the group did not survive the war.
